Maurice Bailey of SOLO and CWBP is interviewed on the continuation of Cornelia Walker Bailey’s efforts to preserve the Sapelo Island red pea as a historic, agricultural staple of the community.
Here’s an excerpt from Southern Living magazine:
“At the heart of SOLO’s efforts is the Sapelo red pea, and one of the organization’s top priorities is establishing a kitchen operation that will allow them to better process, package, and share the red peas and other heirloom harvests with the wider world and create meaningful income opportunities for the island.
The Sapelo red pea is a delicacy…Each bite of this brick red heirloom with a tender interior transports you not only to Hogg Hummock but also to the long-gone Sapelo communities of Raccoon Bluff, Belle Marsh, Shell Hummock, and Lumber Landing and further back to the earlier settlements of Behavior, Bourbon Field, and Hanging Bull—and even across the Atlantic to West Africa.”
