Hurricane Irma created a great deal of damage on Sapelo Island.  Flood waters from the storm surge was especially damaging for many residents in the Hog Hammock community as well as the University of Georgia’s Marine Institute.  Flood waters saturated SICARS and flooded and knocked over the almost mature sugarcane that SICARS is trying to reestablish in partnership with faculty and students at UGA.  Time will tell if the project is viable after the waters recede.
